"Playground"

Painter Courtney S. Hengerer is an artist who allows her subconscious to guide her hand in the creation of her artwork. Pops of color emerge from her otherwise subdued palette, and playful, free-formed marks reminiscent of Paul Klee invite the viewer to immerse themselves within her abstract compositions. Playground will be on display at The Art League Gallery, May 8 – June 2, 2014.

The acrylic works on wood panels are fresh and not overworked. Hengerer notes that she does not begin a piece with a preconceived idea – she begins combining and manipulating layers of acrylic paint until she senses a balance. This spontaneity lends itself to the whimsical and playful final product. Working on wood panels allows Hengerer to build up the paint to achieve the same depth that she had previously been able to achieve while working in encaustic.

“I hope that the viewer comes away from my exhibit with a sense of happiness and discovery. I purposely add hidden details into my work so that the viewer is drawn in and remains engaged. I want to free the imagination and allow for unexpected delights.”

Hengerer draws inspiration from the simplicity and limited palette of the Lascaux Cave Paintings in southwestern France as well as the energies and innocence of artists Joan Miro and Paul Klee. She holds a BFA from the University of Colorado and has been an active member of The Art League since 2006.
